Recife, the capital of the state of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil, is distinguished by its many rivers, bridges, islets, and peninsulas. The old Recife, on the island next to the harbor, is the historic center of the old city dating back to the 16th century. To the south, the popular Boa Viagem’s beach is protected by reefs and is lined with high-rise apartment blocks, modern hotels, and restaurants.
