Madrid, the capital of Spain, situated in the center of the country, is a city of elegant avenues and large, well-kept parks, such as the Buen Retiro. It is famous for its rich collections of European art, among which are works by Goya, Velázquez and other Spanish masters in the Prado Museum. The center of old Madrid from the time of the House of Habsburg is the Plaza Mayor, flanked by porticoes, and nearby are the baroque Royal Palace and the Royal Arsenal, which displays historic weapons.
